Springfield's Macchi and Smith Chosen To Play In 2010 Lax World/USILA North/South Game

Springfield, Mass. - Springfield College' s Joe Macchi and Mike Smith were recognized for their stellar senior campaigns as they were selected to play in the 2010 Lax World/USILA North/South game. The games will be held on Friday, May 28 at Goucher College in Towson, Md., with the Division III game beginning at 3 pm. at Beldon Field, and the Division I/II contest starting at 5:30 pm

Tickets are available on site for $5 each on game day only.

The North/South game began in 1940, when Baltimore hosted the inaugural game, and has been the site for 22 North/South contests, including the first seven games.

In his final season at Springfield, Macchi was a force on the Pride's first midfield line. The Mahopac, N.Y. product scored a team-best 31 goals this season and finished the season with 40 points, which ranked second on the team. A USILA Honorable Mention All-American, NEILA Division III All-New England Second Team honoree, and Pilgrim League All-Conference First Team selection, Macchi had a knack for the clutch as he scored five game-winning goals for SC this season. For his career, he Macchi finished with 68 goals and 87 total points.

A native of South Hadley, Mass., Smith had a standout collegiate career on defense for the Pride. A physical defender, Smith was named to the Pilgrim League All-Conference team all four years at Springfield, including being named to the first team in both his junior and senior seasons. This season, Smith battled through a leg injury and led the team with 27 caused turnovers to go along with 29 ground balls. For his career, he scooped up 148 ground balls and caused 58 caused turnovers, 27 of which came in his final season in Maroon and White.
